Complete Guide to Tesla’s Premium Connectivity (2020 Edition)

Jan 15, 2020

Tesla offers Premium Connectivity as a subscription that provides the capability to access all of the car’s multimedia features over cellular. Many Tesla’s are already grandfathered into having Premium Connectivity for the lifetime of the vehicle. We break down what this means for current and future Tesla owners.

What Is Standard Connectivity?

All Tesla’s come with Standard Connectivity, which enables their vehicles to receive over-the-air software updates (which require Wi-Fi on both plans), standard map and navigation features, Bluetooth pairing, FM radio, Sirius XM capability for XM-enabled Tesla’s, as well as playback from a USB drive and music/media streaming over Wi-Fi.

What Is Premium Connectivity?

Premium Connectivity adds the following features: satellite-view maps with live traffic visualization and in-car streaming music (via Deezer and Spotify).

In addition, video streaming, Caraoke, and an internet browser are all accessible via cellular while the car is parked when Premium Connectivity is active. It is important to note that all owners are able to access these features via Wi-Fi or via a mobile hotspot (such as a mobile hotspot created by a smartphone).

Who already has Premium Connectivity for the life of their Tesla?

New Tesla’s ordered on or before June 30, 2018 will have Premium Connectivity automatically for the lifetime of the car. Additionally, used Tesla’s purchased directly from Tesla on or before January 8, 2020 will also include Premium Connectivity for the lifetime of the car.

Does lifetime Premium Connectivity transfer to future owners?

Yes, it will remain active for all subsequent owners of the vehicle.

Will this have an impact on Autopilot or Full-Self Driving?

Premium Connectivity has no impact on Autopilot or Full Self-Driving. A Tesla is always connected to Tesla’s network regardless, Premium Connectivity simply adds the ability to use the vehicle’s existing cellular capability for additional multimedia features.

Does my Tesla include a trial of Premium Connectivity?

New Model S, Model X, and Model 3 (with Premium Interior) orders include a complimentary year of Premium Connectivity. Model 3 Standard Range and Standard Range Plus receives a 30-day Premium Connectivity trial.

How can I add Premium Connectivity to my Tesla?

All Tesla’s are eligible to add a Premium Connectivity subscription via their Tesla account. The subscription cost is $9.99/month plus tax.

Can I purchase a used Tesla with lifetime Premium Connectivity?

Yes, a lifetime subscription is included on new Tesla’s that were originally ordered on or before June 30, 2018 and used Tesla’s ordered from Tesla on or before January 8, 2020. Please check the order date on the vehicle’s build sheet/Order Agreement, and confirm with the seller.

Does it matter if a Tesla has Premium Connectivity?

As noted, Premium Connectivity only adds two exclusive features (satellite maps and live traffic visualization) so is it won’t be imperative for most owners to have it enabled. The rest of the features (most notably, media streaming) are already accessible via Wi-Fi on every Tesla produced to date. Owners that are constantly traveling may see the utility in not being dependent on Wi-Fi to access the vehicle’s multimedia features, including the ability to watch streaming services such as Netflix while parked and access streaming music services directly via the car. For everyone else, the lack of Premium Connectivity shouldn’t be a deal-breaker especially seeing as a subscription to the service can be added at any time as Tesla adds more features in the future.
