Model Y Available to Order with $2,500 Order Payment

Mar 16, 2019

Bypassing the advance reservation that is typical with Tesla, Model Y is available to order right now via Tesla’s site. Like all other Tesla’s ordered today it is subject to a $2,500 order payment. Don’t expect deliveries to begin for the hotly-anticipated SUV until the end of next year; however, the order payment is fully refundable.

The Long Range RWD, Long Range Dual Motor, and Performance models were made available to order immediately after the unveiling event. EPA range is estimated to meet or exceed 300 miles on the Long Range model, and 280 miles on both dual motor models, while the car boasts a 0-60 time of up to 3.5 seconds.

The options are virtually identical to Model 3’s configurator: the Performance model comes with exclusive performance upgrades like 20” Performance wheels, all cars configured today come with a premium interior — the same as the black or white premium interior found on Model 3, with the exception of an option for a 7-seat layout unique to Model Y that will be delivered in 2021.

Autopilot traffic-aware cruise control is offered at $3,000 as well as Full Self-Driving Capability at $5,000.

Interestingly, Tesla still displays the initial price with gas savings included. Since the tax credit will have expired by the time the Model Y is delivered, the federal incentive is no longer included in the estimated savings.

A Standard Range Model Y with standard interior and a range of 230 miles will complete the lineup in 2021.

Real Talk

It is interesting to see Tesla offer Model Y for sale immediately, as normally Tesla would accept a reservation of around $1,000 then open up orders once the car is ready to begin production. Since it shares ~ 75% of its parts with the Model 3, we can assume Tesla already knows the features and pricing so they can bypass that part of the process. Still, prospective owners are putting down $2,500 order payments on a car that won’t deliver for well over a year. Knowing Tesla’s buyers, those who are are doing so are placing their orders happily and ready to wait as long as Model Y takes to enter production.
