Tesla Downgrades Its Used Vehicle Warranty Policy on Model S/X, Upgrades It on Model 3

Oct 16, 2020

Tesla has changed its extended warranty policy on used vehicle inventory.

Used Model S and Model X inventory sold directly on Tesla’s site comes with the remainder of the vehicle’s original Limited Warranty, as well as an extended warranty period of one year.

Tesla had previously included an extended warranty period of two years on used Model S/X inventory.

For used Tesla’s that are outside of their initial Limited Warranty period, Tesla includes a one-year/10,000-mile warranty that begins on the vehicle’s delivery date.

The 8-year Battery and Drive Unit Limited Warranty remains the same on all used Model S/X vehicles, and comes with unlimited mileage when purchased directly from Tesla.

Used Model 3 inventory includes the remainder of the original New Vehicle Limited Warranty, and for the first time Tesla is also including a 1-year/10,000-mile “Used Vehicle Limited Warranty” that begins after the initial warranty period ends.

Tesla had previously not offered an extended warranty period on Model 3.

The Battery and Drive Unit Limited Warranty remains at 8 years and 120,000 miles for all used Model 3 inventory sold on Tesla.com.

Real Talk

While the extended warranty period on Model S/X may seem shorter than expected (although within industry standards), the change on Model 3 is welcome.

Private sellers aren’t typically competing with Tesla’s own inventory, but should keep in mind Tesla’s own pricing and extended warranty policies when valuing a used Tesla.
