Tesla Raises Model 3 Starting Price, Pushes Delivery Timelines

Tesla has made numerous changes to Model 3 this morning, including a price increase and delayed delivery timelines.

Model 3 Standard Range Plus now starts at $39,490, an increase of $500. With this price change, Tesla has silently updated the range to 250 miles (up 10 miles from 240). It’s unclear at this time whether Tesla has made changes to the Standard Range Plus battery, or if there will be a software update available to all Standard Range Plus owners that improves efficiency. It’s important to note that the Standard Range Model 3 is still available off-menu, and is expected to remain at $35,000; however, the price of the base model has fluctuated over time.

Pearl White Muiti-Coat remains the base color, while Solid Black and metallic paints are now a $1,000 up-charge — Red Multi-Coat remains at $2,000.

Previously, Tesla required a refundable $2,500 deposit to order a car. Tesla has replaced this with a $100 non-refundable deposit.

New 20” Gray Performance Wheels are now included standard on Model 3 Performance.

Those ordering a new Model 3 today can expect a delivery date of 6-8 weeks, and to wait 8-10 weeks for a Performance model.

Real Talk

It’s surprising to see Tesla increase the price of Model 3 (only the Standard Range Plus configuration at the time of this publication), though demand appears to be strong due to the delayed delivery dates and the company has found a way to offer slightly more range in the base configuration that is available on tesla.com

Changing the order deposit to a non-refundable $100 deposit is an understandable move due to the costs associated with preparing an order. A fully-refundable $2,500 deposit made prospective Tesla owners confident in their purchase, but a smaller non-refundable deposit may make it even easier to order a Tesla online while also ensuring Tesla doesn’t lose money on prepping cancelled orders.

Additionally, offering 20” Gray Performance Wheels is a great way to differentiate between the standard 19” Sport wheels and the 20” Performance Wheels. We had felt that they were too similar to be a compelling upgrade, but now are almost as intriguing as the Arachnid wheels offered on other Tesla models.
