Tesla has raised the price of Full Self-Driving capability by $1,000 to $8,000, effective immediately across its entire lineup.
As CEO Elon Musk Tweeted would happen last month, the price of Full Self-Driving Capability was adjusted on July 1st. In the past Tesla has delayed anticipated price increases by as much as a few weeks in order to give owners and prospective buyers more time to prepare. However in this case the price was adjusted exactly as expected, and is also applicable to current owners that may decide to add Full Self-Driving Capability via their Tesla account.
The price increase also applies to new orders for Tesla’s upcoming Cybertruck. Current deposit holders are unaffected, as placing an order for a Cybertruck equipped with Full Self-Driving Capability locks in the price at the time of payment.
Tesla owners will have additional options to add Full Self-Driving to their Tesla in the future as more features become available, including a subscription model. The subscription cost is expected to be in excess of the upfront cost of financing over a term of 72 months, so it may be beneficial to purchase a new or used Tesla already equipped with the option.
Elon Musk has stated that the price will continue to increase in the future, with the value of a completed Full Self-Driving suite excepted to be “in excess of $100,000.”
As we’ve stated previously, it is unlikely that Tesla would price Full Self-Driving out of the consumer market. As promised though, the price will continue increasing over time.
Gradual price increases of $1,000 (or potentially even higher) are likely to continue every few months. This could bode well for those that already own a Tesla equipped with Full Self-Driving Capability, and may make it an opportune time to buy a Tesla with Full Self-Driving Capability on the used market.
It should be noted that this price increase comes without any new features or improvements being added to Autopilot or Full-Self Driving Capability.
